Back to Property To RentNeath & Port Talbot
Neath & Port Talbot is the third most populous county borough in Wales with a population of just below 135,000 in 2001. The two main towns of Neath & Port Talbot have populations of just over 47,000 and just over 35,000 respectively and thus reflect over half of the county boroughs population.
Neath & Port Talbot were once two large towns of the historic county of Glamorgan. In April of 1996 the two former districts merged to become The county Borough of Neath & Port Talbot.
Neath was formally a market town but expanded during the industrial revolution. Steel and tin works employed many along with the coal industry in the surrounding valleys. The construction of railways and canals made Neath a major transportation centre for the coal industry.
Port Talbot also expanded during the industrial revolution due to its Iron Works and its docks. During the heights of the coal industry the docks exported over one million tons of coal and that dock has continually been redeveloped to help the exportation of steel from the Port Talbot Steel works. The steel works remain to this day and employ some 18,000 workers which makes it the largest employer in Wales.
Due to the history of both towns the vast majority of property to rent in Port Talbot and the property to rent in Neath are solid stone terraced houses. This style of property is found in abundance across the valley areas of South Wales.
Most of the property to rent in Neath Port Talbot is occupied by families with a big percentage of those claiming housing benefit.
