Maesteg
Maesteg is a large valley town with a population of just under 20,000 in 2001.
Much of its growth is attributed to the steel works that flourished in the area in the 19th century. Although this industry slowed towards the end of the century in Maesteg, later into that century and into the 20th century the coal industry boomed as it did across much of the Valley areas.
Today Maesteg is regarded as dormitory town for the steel works in Port Talbot where many still find employment. Many of the inhabitants also commute to the nearby town of Bridgend which also benefits from many employers from multinational organisations to smaller local companies.
Due to its history naturally much of the property to rent in Maesteg consists of your typical South Wales terraced property. There are more modern housing developments scattered around the area but these are in the minority.
Maesteg has a busy town centre of its own, but within easy commutable distance is the retail park at McArthur Glen (on the outskirts of Bridgend) and the popular town centre of Bridgend itself.
As with most old mining towns in South Wales, there is a large housing benefit market whom tend to occupy the majority of the property to rent in Maesteg. Naturally there are some private tenants and young professionals too, but these are in the minority.
