Cardiff

Cardiff was made a city in 1905 and later became the capital city of Wales in 1955.  The growth of Cardiff can be attributed to the coal industry as the docks built by the 2nd Marquess of Bute exported the coal produced in The Rhondda, Cynon and Rhymney valleys.  Cardiff thus became the main port for the export of coal and although overtaken by the docks in Barry in 1901 Cardiff remained the administrative centre of the coal trade.  In particular this was centred around the coal exchange which determined the price of coal on the British market and also where the first million pound deal was struck way back in 1907.

The city has continued to develop into modern times with the dock area now seeing huge redevelopment with the Cardiff Bay Barrage completion in 1999 many new high rise apartment blocks dominate the water front.  The Senedd (National Assembly building) is also housed in the Cardiff Bay area along with the Millennium Centre, which is now regarded as one of Wales premier venues for theatre and dance.

Cardiff was awarded with the European City of Sport in 2009 due its role in hosting international sporting events. Sporting venues include The Millennium Stadium (Wales International Venue), Cardiff City Stadium (Cardiff City and the Cardiff Blues), SWALEC stadium (Glamorgan cricket).

With regards to the property to rent in Cardiff there is a huge diverse market, from apartments in both city centre and the Bay area, typical south Wales terraced property and many areas of executive detached properties.   There are very large rental markets in Cardiff Bay, Heath (location of the university hospital of Wales), large student population centred around The University of Cardiff plus in many of the other suburbs close to the City Centre.
